An Open-Access publication is getting more and more popular in the research community all over the world. An Open-Access publication increases the visibility of the research work. Freely accessible documents, however, could be easily misused by others, for instance by using portions of an existing text in their own documents without acknowledging the work of the original authors. Nevertheless, the unrestricted accessibility is the core advantage of Open-Access publications, especially with regard to copyright protection. Due to their accessibility, Open-Access documents are well-suited for automatic plagiarism detection services.

The goal of the OAPS project is to enhance the integrity of Open-Access databases by the use of plagiarism detection mechanisms. In this project, a plagiarism detection service is developed that will be available to the Open-Access community on the World Wide Web. Therefore, several mechanisms will be developed that can be used to continuously harvest Open-Access repositories and process the available documents to use them for a plagiarism detection service. Such a service could also used to find related publications which would be another benefit of the OAPS project.
